Why Jojoba Oil Is Our Go-To Skincare Oil

At Yes Age, we’re thoughtful about every ingredient that goes into our products. That’s why jojoba oil is the backbone of both our cleansing oil and our face serum. It isn’t just a nice addition, it’s the hero ingredient. Here’s why jojoba is a must for us.

About the Jojoba Plant

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is a resilient shrub native to the deserts of Southern California (our home state!) and Arizona. For centuries, Indigenous peoples of the area used jojoba oil topically for skin and hair health. One reason it’s so valued is sustainability: the seeds of jojoba contain a remarkably high oil content compared to many other botanicals, meaning it requires less land and water to produce the same yield. This makes it a more environmentally conscious choice while still delivering exceptional benefits.

Jojoba Mimics the Skin’s Natural Sebum

Here’s where science gets exciting: jojoba oil is chemically unique. Unlike most plant oils, which are primarily made up of triglycerides, jojoba oil is composed of wax esters with fatty acid chain lengths remarkably similar to those found in human sebum. In other words, it looks and behaves almost identically to the oils your skin naturally produces.

Why does this matter? Sebum is your body’s way of maintaining comfort, suppleness, and barrier strength in the skin, but sebum production starts to decline in your mid-20s and continues to drop, especially during perimenopause and menopause. By replenishing with an oil that closely mirrors what your skin is missing, jojoba makes your face feel balanced again — not greasy, not heavy, just back to “normal.”

Doesn’t Clog Pores

Understandably, many of us hesitate to put oil on our face; after all, adolescence often meant doing everything possible to strip it away. But mature skin has different needs, and the right oils make all the difference. Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores. Instead, it supports the skin’s natural function, helping you restore comfort and radiance without worrying about breakouts.

Oils Protect the Skin Barrier

Your skin barrier is your first line of defense against the outside world, and oils are critical to keeping it intact. They slow down transepidermal water loss (TEWL), locking in hydration and preventing dryness, flakiness, and irritation. Because jojoba oil so closely resembles your body’s natural oils, your skin recognizes it as familiar: a perfect fit. It absorbs easily, reinforces the barrier, and leaves your skin nourished, protected, and loved.

We love Jojoba oil and we think you will too. Feel the plant magic in both our Hydrating Cleansing Oil and our Brighten & Defend Face Serum.
